Get Your Office Ready For Spring

get your office ready for springA look at the calendar tells you it’s spring even if it doesn’t feel like it quite yet. No matter, the time is right to get your office ready for spring. A fresh new look and more comfortable furniture can really enhance everyone’s mood and productivity.

That’s right! Research has shown that being comfortable not only makes people feel better, but it also reduces time away from work for health reasons and increases their productivity when they are in the office.

Pay attention to functionality and comfort

So take a look around. Check out all the office chairs and make sure they’re still working properly. Sometimes, the mechanism that lets you adjust the height can break. Sometimes, those chairs start to wobble, or maybe the seat back no longer stays in place.

You may also find some rather worn padding where a formerly cushy seat cushion has been flattened into a hard surface. Any of these can make the chairs quite uncomfortable, and a lack of comfort results in distraction and lower productivity. That’s bad news.

If you find that your furniture is still comfortable and looks great, you’re in luck. If not, you may want to consider replacing some or all of the chairs that no longer live up to your standards. But before you run out and get new chairs, consider this…

Get your office ready for spring with the right look

Functionality and comfort are important. However, does your office have a look you can be proud of? Does it look modern and professional? Or do you prefer a classic look? As you consider upgrading your office furniture, why not make sure to upgrade your office to a more consistent appearance too.

In addition, why not add some spring colours? They could be incorporated into your overall decorative scheme, the furniture, or even added in the form of plants on desks and window sills. Flowers lift everyone’s mood, especially yellow ones, like daffodils and tulips and other spring flowers. Adding some will go a long way as you get your office ready for spring.

And when clients visit your office, you want them to be impressed, or at least reassured, by your office’s professional look. And if your uplifting decorations put a smile on their face, so much the better.

How to find the right furniture?

You may be wondering just how you’ll find furniture that looks good AND feels good. You want furniture that keeps your team comfortable while they work. Unfortunately, it’s hard to tell whether a chair is comfortable and the right fit when you’re just looking at a catalogue.

Instead, to ensure that you’ll find the right furniture go see it in person. Sit on the chairs, try the sofas for the reception area, and make sure the desks work for you. Bring some of your team members too! And yes, you may also want to see the actual colours as they look in real life.

Should you get ergonomic office furniture

Should you go all the way out and get ergonomic office furniture? You may want to consider it.  It’s a lot more expensive, but it will go a long way to prevent occupational hazards such as back pain, neck pain, hip problems, and more.

What if you want to go part of the way even though you’re not quite ready to go all in? You could explore ergonomic office chairs and find out what makes them special. Then look for similar features in the not-quite ergonomic office chair and furniture options and choose versions that come closest. The key to making chairs ergonomically correct lies in fit and adjustability.

You’ll find many options in our several showrooms around London. Which ones feature the exact kind of furniture that’s best for you? Call us on 0800 007 5566 or use our Live Chat and let us know what you’re looking for.

We’ll be happy to point you to the right showroom(s) where you can find the perfect new chairs, desks, sofas, and other office furniture. Have a cup of coffee or tea on us while you decide which chair and sofa offers the best fit.

Once you find what you like, we’ll make sure you get your new furniture right away, generally within a few days at most. Add some potted plants or even fresh flowers, and get your office ready for spring in no time.

Choosing the Right Furniture for Your Office

office-170638_640Last week, I wrote about functionality, comfort, and style. And all these are important to consider when you choose furniture. But how do you know what works best for you? There’s nothing like actually experiencing it!

First, we suggest you call our office on 0800 007 5566 to talk to one of our furniture specialists. They can help you figure out where to start, and what might be the best way for you to proceed.

Choosing the Right Furniture For Your Office By Trying It Out

Next, you should know that we have a number of showrooms in Central London where you can actually see the furniture “Live” and try it out in person. This is especially important when you consider something special, like a classy sofa for your reception area or for a seating area in your office. You want to make sure the sofa is comfortable and looks as good in real life as it does in the catalogue.

This is especially essential when you have a bigger project in mind. You may want to outfit a new office or update an entire existing office. You don’t want to do this without being able to actually see the items you’re choosing.

And if you’re someone who likes to see and try out things before you buy, you’ll really enjoy being able to test-drive our furniture in one of our showrooms. It’s fun too!

Beyond Chairs, Desks, And Sofas

Of course, office interiors go far beyond chairs, desks, and sofas. There are countless options for lighting, for example, and it helps to see them in action. Whether they are floor lamps, desk lamps, ceiling fixtures, or more, you want to see not just what they look like but also the kind of light they provide. You’ll also find that some of them are decorative in addition to functional, while others are stylish yet simple.

But not everything is in every showroom, and that’s why it’s important to speak with someone in our office so they can guide you in the right direction. After all, we want you to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Another key aspect of office interiors is storage! And that can cover a huge range of types, from desk drawers, file cabinets, supplies closets, including freestanding ones, along with a range of desktop storage solutions. And since storage options tend to be on the bulkier side, it’s especially important to choose wisely and make sure they fit in with the rest of your office.

How To Choose Office Furniture: Style, Comfort, Functionality

modern chairWhen it comes to Style, Comfort, and/or Functionality, you might think about clothing. But I’m not in the clothing business, so this is clearly not the topic of the day. Instead, it’s all about furniture!

A little while ago, I came across a notice about a traveling art exhibit on modern chairs – and I mean MODERN in all caps. These chairs were works of modern art, and very few of them struck me as the kind of chair I could see myself using at work. Take a look:

If you want to see more of these chairs, you could Google the exhibition and find several other advertisements for it in different cities – and most of them feature at least some different chairs… which means you can see at least a dozen of them between the various announcements.

What do you think? Which one of these chairs strikes you as the most comfortable?

Looking at them made me think about how we often choose office furniture.

How To Choose Office Furniture: Functionality

What do you consider when you select chairs or other pieces of furniture for your office? When you look at most offices, the furniture is heavily weighed towards functionality. And we mean functionality in the sense of getting the job done.

They work, as far as chairs go. You can sit on them and work on your computer. But are they comfortable? Well, some of them are more so than others. And the same chair may feel more comfortable to one person than another. It depends on the person’s height, weight, build, and even how long they’ve been spending their days in an office chair.

Comfort

The thing is that being present and in a seated position isn’t enough to be really effective. Think about it! If you’re uncomfortable, you’re distracted, and that’s not good for the quality of the work you do. So considering comfort when selecting chairs is important.

Style

How many of us consider style when we select office furniture? It seems like a luxury that has no place in an office. But when you look at those artsy chairs, style seems like a feature that doesn’t combine too well with comfort and functionality. But that’s not really true.

Look at some of the classier offices, and you’ll find that the furniture can look very stylish indeed. And a sleek look doesn’t necessarily come with a big price tag either.

So what would you find at Crane? We have the full range of furniture, from basic and functional (and very economical) all the way to sleek furniture for a modern, professional look. We also offer ergonomic furniture for maximum comfort.

In fact, we pride ourselves of offering chairs, desks, and other furniture items that score well on all three scales. You’ll easily find options that are sleek and stylish, comfortable, and, yes, functional, all at the same time. Take a look at our catalogue to check out the possibilities…

Ergonomic Office Chairs For Comfort & Productivity

ergonomic office chairsAre you comfortable while you sit at work? You spend hours in front of your computer, and when your back hurts, you may struggle with getting work done. Consider looking at ergonomic office chairs for comfort, productivity, and a healthy back.

Most people’s chairs don’t fit the bill! And it may not just be chair that’s not a good fit. Your desk might be too high or too low, and your computer might not be in the right position either. For now though, we’ll focus on the chair! After all, if the chair’s not right, the best desk and computer set up won’t do much to make you comfortable.

So take a close look at your office chair if you find yourself with an aching back, which could distract you and affect your productivity. You might also experience a pain in the backside or along the back of your thighs. Read on to find out how to remedy those discomforts.

Select Ergonomic Office Chairs for Comfort And Productivity

The first and most important aspect of being comfortable at work involves the correct position while you sit at your workstation. And that starts with the right chair:

Select a Chair That Fits You

First of all, your chair should fit you.

This means that your feet should reach the floor comfortably and your back should be fully supported by the chair’s back, without the seat surface digging into your knee area as you sit far enough back to actually reach that back support.

In addition, the chair should feature a good amount of upholstery to support you comfortably.

Does your chair fit those criteria? Many chairs don’t, especially if you’re shorter (or taller, or heavier) than average.

You can keep looking for the right chair, either one that fits you or one that’s adjustable so you can make it fit your needs. The best option: an ergonomic chair, because it will solve most “fit” problems by design.

While ergonomic chairs aren’t cheap, being uncomfortable at work will cost a lot more than the fanciest ergonomic chairs because it will make you much less productive.

So consider investing in the best ergonomic chair you can afford. Here are some of the key features you should include in your considerations (in addition to overall fit):

Height Adjustable Back and Lumbar Support

When you saw the office chair above, you were probably wondering about all those levers at the bottom of the chair. They’re what allows you to make any of the adjustments to ensure the right fit.

First, let’s look at the back support. The lumbar is the region of the spine between the diaphragm and the pelvis; it supports the most weight and is the most flexible. An adjustable lumbar mechanism allows the user to change the seat back shape in this region, to make it more comfortable and provide better support. It usually includes an adjustable lumbar cushion as well.

Forward Tilt Mechanism

Here’s something we don’t think as much about…

People are more likely to sit in an upright or forward-leaning posture than to recline while working at the computer. Lumbar support alone cannot naturally restore spinal curvatures in a body that is seated in an upright position because it’s too far away.

Instead, make sure you’re sitting in a naturally balanced position, which will also help support your back. And to achieve that, make sure that your chair has a tilt mechanism.

When the pelvis changes position, the body works to restore balance, and that can lead to muscle fatigue and discomfort. Make sure you are able to tilt your seat when you’re leaning forward. Your lower back will thank you.

Seat Slide

The seat slide feature is another thing most people aren’t even aware of. But if you’re ever bothered by the edge of the chair poking into your thighs, you should insist on it. It allows you to slide the seat into a position where you to get the appropriate level of under-thigh support without restricting circulation.

Armrests and Width

Next, your chair should have armrests if at all possible, and they should be adjustable.

You probably won’t use the armrests while you type, but they come in handy at other times. And they should have the right height AND be close enough to your body so you don’t have to reach for them. This means, they must be adjustable.

Which brings us to the correct width…

Believe it or not, office chairs can be too wide OR too narrow. Neither of those is a good fit. If they’re too wide, they don’t support you properly, and the armrests are bound to be too far away from you. If they’re too narrow, they poke you in certain places and make sitting rather uncomfortable, especially when you have to sit for a lengthy period of time, which most of us do.
