October is Identity Theft Prevention Month, but we should work on preventing it all year long. So read on and take action. And put reminders in your calendar to take action again and again.
While the Halloween goblins may be gone come November, the world still contains plenty of unsavoury characters that might be after your valuable information!
So let’s talk about how you can protect your information (and that of your clients) from bin thieves and related nasties.
Identity Theft Prevention Tips
Yes, we’re going to be talking about shredders and the fact that you need to pulverize sensitive information so that the bin thieves can’t get to it.
But that’s just step 3. There are other ways you need to protect yourself and your information, BEFORE it’s time to get rid of it…
1) Keep sensitive information in a safe place
While you still need the information, be sure to keep it in a safe place. This means to keep it locked up securely, whether it’s on your computer or in your file cabinet.
2) Beware of phishing
Phishing is a practice where someone tries to trick you into entering your personal information into what you THINK is a legitimate website. Except that it’s not.
Phishing attempts are becoming ever more common, and they’re getting smarter too. They’re also no longer restricted to arriving by email, but also by phone.
Basically, the rule is do NOT give out personal information in response to an email or a phone call. Tell them you’ll call back on a number you know and trust. Or go to the website that you normally do business with.
In addition, make sure any website which asks you to enter personal information is legitimate and protects your information. Look for the “https://” prefix when you are asked to enter your info.
PayPal always protects your credit card information, and most shopping cart systems do too.
3) Shred sensitive information
NOW we’re getting to the shredding step…
Once you need to get rid of excess sensitive paperwork, shred it. And when you do, be sure you shred it into small enough bits that no one can reconstruct the information.
This means you should use shredders that make confetti out of your documents, not the ones that simply cut them into long strips of paper.
